Meatballs, Sea Shanties, Demons: A Chat with Lucy Bellwood

Today we talk with Lucy Bellwood, a Portland-based Adventure Cartoonist on Intelligame Radio. A full-time illustrator, Lucy talks about how games provided her a gateway into art, battling personal demons, and boats in games.

For the last couple of weeks, we’ve experimented with a new show called Intelligame Radio. It’s on Anchor.fm, a sort-of hybrid of Snapchat and podcasting. Posts stay live for 24 hours, broken up into 5-minute segments for easy listening. We’ve conducted some great interviews from E3 and Game Devs of Color Expo, and had some great discussions, too. There’s also a call-in feature, so if you have questions or comments, you can chime in right from the app.

Today we talked with Lucy Bellwood, author of Baggywrinkles: A Lubber’s Guide to Life at Sea. Specializing in tall ships, she’s been all over the world to share her love of sailing and comics. Though she’s not a self-described “gamer,” video games influenced Lucy’s life and still inspire her to this day. Over the course of three segments, we pick her brain to learn about her past, ways that boats have made their way into gaming, and working as a creative.

Scans from Lucy’s most recent project, the “100 Demon Dialogues,” are available on her Instagram page. You can also find her on Twitter at @lubellwoo. UPDATE: 100 Demon Dialogues is now out, and Lucy’s toured across the country for the release! You can learn more about the book at her website.

Intelligame Radio updates daily with interviews, discussions, and more. To get updates from Intelligame direct to your phone, download the Anchor.fm app on iOS or Android and favorite Intelligame Radio. If you have a topic you want to hear discusses on the show, or have feedback, use the call-in button and leave a message! You just may end up on the show.
